Interviewing candidates for leadership roles is more than just assessing qualifications; it's about uncovering the essence of their leadership style and vision and uncovering a candidate's potential to drive company growth and achieve strategic goals. Consider asking the following questions to help you unlock the true potential of leadership candidates.


 
 

Critical Thinking Questions:

  1. Tell me about a challenging decision you made as a leader. How did you approach it, and what was the outcome?

    We’re looking to uncover the candidate's decision-making process under pressure. Understanding how they analyze situations, consider alternatives, and manage risks provides valuable insights into their leadership approach and problem-solving skills.

  2. How do you handle conflicts within your team? Can you provide an example of a successful resolution?

    Conflict resolution is an every-day, necessary skill for leaders. This question assesses the candidate's emotional intelligence, communication skills, and ability to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics. You should get a glimpse into their leadership style and team management approach.

  3. What strategies do you use to foster innovation and creativity within your team? Can you share a specific example of a successful implementation?

    Innovation is key to driving business growth and staying ahead in a competitive market. This question reveals the leader’s approach to fostering a culture of creativity, their openness to new ideas, and their ability to inspire and motivate their team to think in new ways.

Creative Thinking Questions:

  1. If you were tasked with completely restructuring our organization, what steps would you take, and why?

    With economic uncertainties, strategic thinking and the ability to envision and implement organizational change has become increasingly important. Their response can provide insights into their analytical skills, vision for the future, and how solution-oriented they are.

  2. Imagine you have unlimited resources. What innovative project would you implement to drive growth and success for our company?

    Encouraging candidates to think creatively about potential projects can reveal their vision for the company's future and their ability to think outside the box. Their response can highlight their strategic thinking, ambition, and ability to conceptualize and execute innovative ideas.

  3. If you could choose any three leaders, dead or alive, to join your advisory board, who would you choose and why?

    This question will give you insight into the candidate's leadership role models and the qualities they value in leadership. It can provide a deeper understanding of their leadership philosophy, values, and the type of guidance and inspiration they seek from others.

Goal Setting and Achievement Questions:

  1. How do you approach setting goals for yourself and your team? Can you share an example of a challenging goal you set and successfully achieved?

    This question assesses the candidate's goal-setting methodology, their ability to establish clear objectives, and most importantly, their track record of achieving measurable results. It also reveals their approach to motivating and aligning team members toward common goals.

  2. How do you identify opportunities for business growth and development? Can you provide an example of a successful growth strategy you implemented in a previous role?

    This question evaluates the candidate's strategic thinking and business acumen. Their response can reveal their ability to analyze market trends, identify growth opportunities, and develop and execute effective strategies to drive business expansion.

  3. How do you ensure that your team's goals align with the company's overall vision and objectives? Can you share a successful example of goal alignment from your experience?

    Effective leaders align team goals with the broader organizational vision to ensure everyone is working toward common objectives. This question assesses the candidate's ability to communicate vision, create alignment, and drive collective action toward shared goals.

By asking some of these questions, you’ll gain valuable insights into a leadership candidate's ability to drive company growth and align their efforts with the organization's vision.
